Dr Brian Fleming: Irish Education, 1922-2007 : Cherishing All the Children?

Irish Education, 1922-2007 : Cherishing All the Children?

Description

Equality of opportunity in Irish education was promulgated as a national aim in 1916. The purpose of this study is to trace the trajectory of this objective in the first eighty-five years of the Irish State. While the goal of equality of opportunity was reiterated throughout, the rhetoric has not been matched by the reality. Weaknesses in the policy formation process itself have been identified, most particularly a reluctance on the part of successive administrations to prioritise the needs and rights of children and young people over those of vested interests, and an unwillingness to introduce rigorous and transparent mechanisms for the assessment of system performance. However, the evidence suggests that the primary reason for the failure to achieve the objective is a lack of political will and leadership on the issue.

In this keynote address to a national conference of Montessori educators, Marshall Rosenberg describes his progressive, radical approach to teaching that centers on compassionate connection. Marshall describes the counterproductive role that power and punishment play in our schools, and challenges educators to motivate students instead "by a reverence for life." This practical application of Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process offers educators the tools to create exceptional learning environments. This is an exceptional resource for teachers, school counselors, school administrators, child care providers and more! Last Orders is a much-loved classic of English literature. It won both the 1996 Booker Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. In 2001, it was adapted into an award-winning film starring Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins. Four men once close to Jack Dodds, a London butcher, meet to carry out his peculiar last wish: to have his ashes scattered into the sea. For reasons best known to herself, Jack's widow, Amy, declines to join them. On the surface the tale of a simple if increasingly bizarre day's outing, Last Orders is Graham Swift's most poignant exploration of the complexity and courage of ordinary lives. In 2012 Picador celebrated its 40th anniversary. During that time we have published many prize-winning and bestselling authors including Bret Easton Ellis and Cormac McCarthy, Alice Sebold and Helen Fielding, Graham Swift and Alan Irish Education, 1922-2007 : Cherishing All the Children? ebook pdf Hollinghurst. Years later, Picador continue to bring readers the very best contemporary fiction, non-fiction and poetry from across the globe. Discover more at picador.com/40

Origin of Food Products by Means of the Analysis of Isotopic Content

Description

In the first chapter of my thesis I present a brief overview of analytical methods used in food chemistry such as IR, Raman, NMR, UV/Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, chromatography, electronic nose, DNA- based technology, thermal techniques. The second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of ascorbic acid. It describes a new method for calculating site-specific 13C relative abundances in vitamin C samples.A modern study for the territorial classification of wines is presented in the third chapter. The fourth chapter examines a couple of synthetic procedures for the preparation of a long chain alcohol (octacosanol) and the use of IRMS to discriminate samples coming from different synthetic or natural pathways. The last chapter is a description of the work done during the visiting period in the Department of Geological Science in Bloomington (Indiana, U.S.).

In The Lightlings, Dr. R.C. Sproul weaves an allegorical tale that captures the essence of the biblical story of redemption. A race of tiny beings known as lightlings represent humanity as they pass through all the stages of the biblical dramacreation, fall, and redemption. In the end, children will understand why some people fear light more than darkness, but why they need never fear darkness again. Richly detailed illustrations by Justin Gerard will hold childrens interest, and discussion questions and Scripture references in the back will help parents guide children into the deeper meaning of the story. Mr. Fish is nervously awaiting his first day of Identifying and Treating Mental and Emotional Disorders : Conditions of Neurosis and Psychosis download book school, and he frets about not knowing how to write his name, how to draw shapes, and how to do math until he's reassured that school is the perfect place to learn how to master all of these new skills, in Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School from Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna.

Identifying and Treating Mental and Emotional Disorders : Conditions of Neurosis and Psychosis

Description

In the chapters of this book, I present information regarding common emotional conditions of "neurosis" and the less-common conditions of mental illness referred-to as "psychosis." It is my intention to help define the differences between these two types of emotional and mental disorders but to also present the differences between common conditions of neurosis that are in the anxiety and depression categories. Subjects covered include descriptions of major depression, bipolar depression, schizophrenia and different types of major anxiety disorders. Signs, symptoms and diagnosis are discussed, as well as the treatments that are administered for these different types of disorders (i.e. pharmaceutical, psychiatric and natural therapies). It is my hope that this book will provide a good basic educational resource for readers wishing to learn about identifying and treating mental and emotional disorders. This book is not intended to be an extensive manual but is intended to contain information most often sought by laypersons on the subject. TABLE OF CONTENTS: CHAPTER ONE: Psychosis versus Common Anxiety and Depression CHAPTER TWO: A Description of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder CHAPTER THREE: Confirming a Diagnosis of Mental Illness CHAPTER FOUR: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety Disorders CHAPTER FIVE: Positive Versus Negative Responses to Anxiety CHAPTER SIX: What are the Differences between OCD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder? And What is Cyberchondria CHAPTER SEVEN: The Basic Differences between Anxiety & Depression CHAPTER EIGHT: Antidepressants Effective for some but not for Others CHAPTER NINE: Can Hypoglycemia and other Medical Conditions Mimic Psychiatric Disorders? CHAPTER TEN: More Patent-Education and Doctor-Communication about SSRI Antidepressants CHAPTER ELEVEN: Stress Management to Aid Treatments for Mind and Emotions

Why Science Is Wrong...about Almost Everything

[FREE] Bourgery, Atlas of Anatomy pdf, epub, mobi

Jean-marie Le Minor,Henri Sick: Bourgery, Atlas of Anatomy

Bourgery, Atlas of Anatomy

Description

This is anatomically correct Bourgery's monumental and unsurpassed treatise. We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) for his "Atlas of Anatomy", which was not only a massive event in medical history, but also remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published in any language. In 1830, having received his doctorate in medicine three years prior, Bourgery began work on his magnificent atlas in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes were published the following year, but completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of dedication; Bourgery lived just long enough to finish his labor of love, but the last of the treatise's eight volumes was not published in its entirety until five years after his death. The four parts of Bourgery's treatise cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (exploring in detail nearly all the major operations that were performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob's spectacular hand-colored, life-size lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, color, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research; the images are to this day unsurpassed in anatomical illustration.

Val McDermid: Forensics: An Anatomy of Crime

Forensics: An Anatomy of Crime

Description

The dead talk. To the right listener, they tell us all about themselves: where they came from, who they are, how they lived, how they died - and who killed them. Through forensic medicine, a corpse, the scene of a crime or a single hair can reveal the secrets that hold the truth and allow justice to be done. TV schedules are full of CSI: Miami and the media constantly confronts us with brutal crimes, many of which will be unravelled using forensic technology. But how much do we really understand about forensics? What is it like to be a SCO (Scene of Crime Operative)? Attend an autopsy? Where did it come from? How reliable are its proofs? Bestselling crime author Val McDermid, author of The Wire in the Blood and The Vanishing Point, draws on the vast archives of Wellcome Collection and interviews with top-level professionals in all areas of forensic science to answer these questions. She looks at famous (and unknown) murder cases, but also at investigations which revolve around the living: sexual assaults, missing persons, violent assaults, robberies, mistaken identity and custody cases. She will look at history of the subject, from its first appearances in the courts of seventeenth-century Europe, through Jack the Ripper to the pioneers of the twentieth century, whose discoveries include DNA fingerprinting, toxicology and criminal profiling.

In a wonderful synthesis of science, history, and imagination, Gino SegrE, an internationally renowned theoretical physicist, embarks on a wide-ranging exploration of how the fundamental scientific concept of temperature is bound up with the very essence of both life and matter. Why is the internal temperature of most mammals fixed near 98.6? How do geologists use temperature to track the history of our planet? Why is the quest for absolute zero and its quantum mechanical significance the key to understanding superconductivity? And what can we learn from neutrinos, the Foreign Gods, Inc. download ebook pdf subatomic "messages from the sun" that may hold the key to understanding the birth-and death-of our solar system? In answering these and hundreds of other temperature-sensitive questions, SegrE presents an uncanny view of the world around us.

Foreign Gods, Inc.

Description

From a disciple of the late Chinua Achebe comes a masterful and universally acclaimed novel that is at once a taut, literary thriller and an indictment of greed’s power to subsume all things, including the sacred. Foreign Gods, Inc., tells the story of Ike, a New York-based Nigerian cab driver who sets out to steal the statue of an ancient war deity from his home village and sell it to a New York gallery. Ike's plan is fueled by desperation. Despite a degree in economics from a major American college, his strong accent has barred him from the corporate world. Forced to eke out a living as a cab driver, he is unable to manage the emotional and material needs of a temperamental African American bride and a widowed mother demanding financial support. When he turns to gambling, his mounting losses compound his woes. And so he travels back to Nigeria to steal the statue, where he has to deal with old friends, family, and a mounting conflict between those in the village who worship the deity, and those who practice Christianity. A meditation on the dreams, promises and frustrations of the immigrant life in America; the nature and impact of religious conflicts; an examination of the ways in which modern culture creates or heightens infatuation with the "exotic," including the desire to own strange objects and hanker after ineffable illusions; and an exploration of the shifting nature of memory, Foreign Gods is a brilliant work of fiction that illuminates our globally interconnected world like no other. From the Hardcover edition.

Geoff Ryman: The King's Last Song

The King's Last Song

Description

"[Ryman] has not so much created as revealed a world in which the promise of redemption takes seed even in horror."-The Boston Globe "Sweeping and beautiful...The complex story tears the veil from a hidden world."-The Sunday Times "Inordinately readable ...extraordinary in its detail, color and brutality."-The Independent "Ryman has crafted a solid historical novel with an authentic feel for both ancient and modern Cambodia." -Washington DC City Paper "Another masterpiece by one of the greatest fiction writers of our time."-Kim Stanley Robinson "Ryman's knack for depicting characters; his ability to tell multiple, interrelated stories; and his knowledge of Cambodian history create a rich narrative that looks at Cambodia's "killing fields" both recent and ancient and Buddhist belief with its desire for transcendence. Recommended for all literary fiction collections." -Library Journal Archeologist Luc Andrade discovers an ancient Cambodian manuscript inscribed on gold leaves but is kidnapped-and the manuscript stolen-by a faction still loyal to the ideals of the brutal Pol Pot regime. Andrade's friends, an ex-Khmer Rouge agent and a young motoboy, embark on a trek across Cambodia to rescue him. Meanwhile, Andrade, bargaining for his life, translates the lost manuscript for his captors. The result is a glimpse into the tremendous and heart-wrenching story of King Jayavarman VII: his childhood, rise to power, marriage, interest in Buddhism, and the initiation of Cambodia's golden age. As Andrade and Jayavarman's stories interweave, the question becomes whether the tale of ancient wisdom can bring hope to a nation still suffering from the violent legacy of the last century. Geoff Ryman is the author of the novels Air (winner of Arthur C Clarke and James Tiptree awards) and The Unconquered Country (a World Fantasy Award winner). Canadian by birth, he has lived in Cambodia and Brazil and now teaches creative writing at the University of Manchester in England.

Laura Kaplan Shanley,Michel Odent: Unassisted Childbirth

Unassisted Childbirth

Description

According to Laura Kaplan Shanley, a renowned leader in the natural-birth movement, human birth is inherently safe and relatively painless--provided we refrain from physical or psychological interference. The problems often associated with birth can be traced to three main factors: poverty, unnecessary medical intervention, and fear. When these causes are eliminated, most women can give birth either alone or with the help of a partner, friends, or family. This second edition of Unassisted Childbirth leads with a history of childbirth and then describes how most deliveries occur today, detailing why these processes don't serve mothers or babies. The information in this unique book gives women yet another legitimate choice in childbirth that doesn't rely on doctors and technology, and allows parents, birth professionals, and general readers to reexamine their most basic ideas about birth and learn to think in new ways.

A Christmas Carol

Description

Dickens's classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. Classics Illustrated tells this wonderful tale in colorful comic strip form, providing an excellent introduction for younger readers. Also includes theme discussions and study questions.

These fast-paced mysteries pay homage to Moorcock's many literary enthusiasms for authors as diverse as Clarence E. Mulford, Dashiell Hammett, Georges Simenon, and his boyhood hero, Sexton Blake. "The secret password is yorc," the princess whispered. Edith longed for her girlhood in England, when her secrets had been kept safe by her dog Reddie. But now in God s timing, Edith is director of a nursing school in Belgium. Caught in the turmoil of World War I, Edith finds herself surrounded by enemy spies. As a nurse protected by the Red Cross, will Edith turn her back on the allied soldiers who desperately need her help?" Inspired by Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle Repair Manual free epub his nine-book Conversations with God series, many people have asked Neale Donald Walsch to find a way to deliver the most essential pieces of God's message in a more succinct way. The result is a concise text detailing and expanding just what we need to know about life and how to live it. Bringing his many conversations over the years into sharper focus than ever before, Walsch encourages readers to cast aside religious and cultural trappings, and to build on, broaden, and enrich our Ancient Story. But to move forward on this ever-expanding and encompassing spiritual voyage means not only understanding what Walsch considers the most important insights of his Conversations with God, but also applying them in the most practical of ways. And so Walsch has included solid suggestions on how to apply each of the 25 Core Messages in daily life. Should humanity begin carrying these messages forward, starting today, we can change the world.
